happy things: Apple's Facetime

I'm away from home a lot. So is my husband. We text all day and up until last year we had to rely on phone calls too. Now though, when I'm missing him we can Facetime. I don't know what we did before this.

I'm in NYC for the BlogHer '12 convention (and back home in New England-where we are both from-  visiting family.) It's a 2+ week trip. Last night I had dinner with my friends Dev and Karen at a great place in Gossip Girl territory called Parlor. Crazy good salmon. When I got back to my hotel room after a full, hot day in the city all I wanted to do was see L. and Emma, the puppy.

Sitting at the desk after a cool shower and seeing the face of my husband in Seattle was sooo good. Bonus: talking with Emma and seeing her tilt her head trying to look behind the monitor to find out where I was. Using Facetime, it's as if they are right here with me, when I show him my conference badge or the incredible skyline from my window. Sometimes I just want to see his smile and the familiar way the sun hits the wall behind him in the office at home. As he talks to me I can hear the lawnmowers in our neighborhood and the sparrows who I know are sitting on that precise branch on the cedar tree by the back deck. It calms my homesickness.

Facetime is a product of Apple and this video calling  feature is available on the iPhone 4, iPad 2, iPod Touch or the Mac. The picture is clear and the calls are easy to make. You just choose someone from your contacts and you ring them like a traditional phone call. I remember the first time I rode Spaceship Earth at EPCOT. During the attraction ride, there is a scene where family members across the planets are talking to each other through something that looks an awful lot like Facetime. I remember thinking "That is COOL! The future is going to be COOL." And it is.
