The Happygirl Guide to February 2018

It seems almost hard to believe that January is finally over. Were there 97 or 98 days in this past month? Well, at least February is nice and short and then we welcome March and it feels like spring is almost here. February isn't such a bad month, as months go. For one thing, there's Valentine's Day. And chocolate.  And Super Bowl LII and the Olympics.  Read on to see what else is happening  to make this month a happy one.

Rabbit rabbit! Set your mind to believe that this will be a great, healthy month for you. Visualize yourself strong, confident and achieving your goals! Check in on your New Year's Resolutions and reevaluate what you hope to achieve this month.

It's Groundhog Day! Will this long winter end sooner or later? Here are four facts you probably didn't know about Groundhog Day.

It's also National Bubble Gum Day. Take a stroll back to your childhood and pick up a pack of your favorite gum. Chew away and remember being a kid, riding your bike during warm summer days and chewing your favorite gum. (Mine's Bazooka. I seriously love this stuff.)

It's Take Your Child to the Library Day. If you don't have a little one of your own, consider revisiting your favorite childhood book. The first time I read Shel Silverstein's "Where the Sidewalk Ends" I fell in love with his wild imagination. This still remains one of my favorite books.

It's Super Bowl Sunday with the Philadelphia Eagles facing off against the New England Patriots. While I still love this fire roasted corm dip (which I first made in 2013 and which I bring to most parties) this year, I'm trying to live a healthier lifestyle (even on "special" days which I would typically use as an excuse to eat unhealthy), so I'll be trying some of these lighter recipes. This healthier Hummus Queso Dip looks incredible.

There's a new baby at Disney's Animal Kingdom! If you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World soon, be sure to take the Kilimanjaro Safari to see mama Tuma and her new calf, the first hippo baby born at Disney's Animal Kingdom in 13 years!

How's your yoga game? I love this video of a dog joining his person for a session of yoga.

Valentine's Day is a week from today. If you're going to be sending some love to someone at a distaance, consider buying the card, ordering the flowers or gifts today so it gets there in time. My favorite Valentine's Day gift is a glassybaby. This year there is a limited edition one called Cherish which is dreamy white and etched with a delicate silver heart. At $55 (+ complimentary shipping!) it's less expensive than a dozen roses, lasts longer, has zero calories and your loved one will think of you every time they watch the votive glow.

Today, cook an extra portion of your dinner and drop it off to someone you know who needs a home-cooked meal.  (A single friend who works too hard and gets home late, an elderly neighbor)

The PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics begins today in South Korea. Are you more of a hockey or figure skating fan? Which ever one you are tune into NBC to catch your favorite athletes now through February 25th. Here is the schedule of games including the opening and closing ceremonies.

The Westminster Dog Show is this week from February 10th-13th, with Best in Show on Tuesday night. Love dogs? Consider adopting a new best friend. There"s a shelter dog who just knows he or she has the soul of a champion. Visit Petfnder.com to find your champ.

Feeling blah? Sick of the grey skies? Feeling down?  Try adding some Vitamin D into your day. Here are seven reasons why you need Vitamin D

Gandhi said "Be the change you wish to see in the world." Visit Change.org to see which causes you could help by signing their petitions and making a change in your world.

In our quest to ingest less chemicals, we recently purchased a SodaStream, to make our own carbonated water. I add a few drops of orange essence and it tastes like a summer day.

Happy Valentine's Day! Send I Love You cards to your grandparents, your parents and your friends. Sure, you could text but think of their expressions when they get a card in the mail from you.

If you observe Lent, it starts today with Ash Wednesday. Instead of giving something up for Lent, do something which benefits others like refraining from gossip. Doing something like this will also make you feel pretty good about yourself. Learn more about the meaning of Ash Wednesday here.

It's National Caregivers Day. Do you know someone who is a dedicated caregiver and could use a break? If possible, offer to give them a night out by taking over for them for a few hours.

Food banks still need items to stock their shelves, especially now after the holiday giving season. During this week's shopping, pick up some non-perishable items to donate to your local food pantry.  Find your local food bank here.

It's National  Random Acts of Kindness Day. Do something(s) that will make some else's day. Whether it's holding that elevator button, letting someone else have your seat on the train or bringing a box of blankets to your local animal shelter, today is a perfect day to be kind.

Welcome to National Drink Wine Day. (As if you need a better reason to uncork a bottle of vino.) If you're looking for a new favorite sparkling wine under $20 use this guide from FoodandWine.com

If your niece asked you who your favorite president is, what would you say? In preparation for National President's Day, here's your guide to the United States Presidents.

Spring starts one month from today!

I am always looking for new podcasts to enjoy and I'm loving this one called Forever35, a wellness podcast by Kate Spence and Doree Shafrir. For beauty, wellness and self-care, Kate and Doree are like the funny big sisters you wish you had.

Yey!. It's National Margarita Day! While I love mixing up my own batch at home (on the rocks, no salt on the rim), Trader Joe's ready to  pour margaritas are incredible. I love bringing a bottle to parties.

It's Girl Scout Cookie Weekend! Support your local scouts and buy some boxes of your favorite cookie. My favorite are the Trefoils but there is a new Smores cookie as well. See the cookie flavors here

If you have Amazon Prime and you haven't started watching "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" yet, you need to. The writing and acting are brilliant and if you need to just snuggle under a blanket and watch something that will make you happy, this is it.

It's the closing ceremonies of the Olympics. Invite some friends over and toast your country!

Is there someone in your life who has gone out of their way to help you? Maybe it was the clerk who found you the shirt your wanted in your size or a flight attendant who helped you with your overhead bags when you were exhausted? Fill out a comment card in person or on the company website to let their companies know about the excellent service you received.

I am so excited to see the comedy thriller  "Game Night" starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams. I'll be seeing this film this weekend with my best game night friends.

You made it! Tomorrow is March and spring is just three weeks away with summer following right behind it. I hope you had a happy February!
